That’s What She Said…

Last week, as we celebrated Thanksgiving, I spent a lot of time contemplating how thankful I am for so many things.  At the top of the list is my bride.  No one knows the life of a pastor’s wife and mom unless you are one.  I’ve watched her strength and grace in so many situations.  She carries the same burdens I do, and prays for C3, and has the same passion burning within to see God do huge things.  She has compassion that is second to none.  Honestly, I’ve never met anyone who comes close to her.  I’m more than blessed.

Those who are close to her know of her multiple talents.  For years I’ve asked Angie to publish some stuff.  She has amazing gifts in many areas, including writing, poetry and photography.  She’s finally done it!  You can go here to check out here new book.

What the Heck Am I Doing?

Today I was thinking - which is very dangerous on a Monday! I turned down a church in another state who wanted me to consider being their pastor. Sometimes the last 5+ years have felt like trying to run a sprint with a tractor trailer chained to my back. Ministry - real ministry - is not for the coward or the faint of heart.

One question I’m asked repeatedly is this, “Why/How have you stayed?” If you don’t know the story, you can check out “Barbaric Grace” for more details - but in short pastoring has not been easy. The burdens you carry, the hurting people you minister to, the decisions that must be made that affect lives - all of this, and more… occasionally dealing with cowardly gossips and liars who will spin any story to make you look bad, knowing it’s ridiculous… So, why put up with it? Why transition a church a go through such a battle?

At times the thought of being somewhere else, anywhere else, seemed appealing. In fact, it’s humorous to me that one of the lies that flew was that I was going to somehow take a bunch of money and move to Texas when the campus sold. Are you kidding me? It wasn’t just Texas - there have been offers from churches in other states as well - Georgia, NC, TN, CO - and Texas! All of them much larger churches too. But… I’m still here, 7 months after we sold the property. I wonder if all the “investigators” and “whistle blowers” have launched their campaigns against those who lied, so they can “protect innocent people” from getting hurt? Some of the meanest people you’ll meet are in church - so learn how to help them leave!

Why have I stayed? Why did I turn down another church today? Because C3 is my life’s passion. Those who tried every deceptive means to try to stop us misunderstood a couple of things: 1. This is not a job, it’s what I was born to do. I don’t do this for a check, I do this out of a passion. 2. As Angie says, they underestimated our ability to suffer. See, if you’re not a pastor, you can’t fully understand this - but let me try to break this down. When your not in ministry and you launch character assassination against your pastor, you don’t lose much. You get to go to work, go on with life, look spiritual, say you’re doing it for “Jesus” and “new people” and “your church” - and usually no one calls you on it. But when you’re on the receiving end, in ministry, you don’t go on with other areas of your life, because ministry is your life.

So, I’ve stayed… and will stay. I spent 35 years in churches and didn’t see God move the way I’ve observed him moving the last couple of years. I can’t imagine doing anything else. The book of Acts really had it right - it would be awesome if more “church” people knew their Bibles! To those “church” people - you wonder why your antics didn’t work… you were never fighting me - and you never understood what I was fighting for. What God’s done at C3 can only be explained by his power and his moving - no human being could sustain the onslaught and survive, but God’s purposes prevail.

I’ve heard from so many pastors since this post - and many of them struggling with issues and decisions that they did not want me to address publically. Hey, would you please pray for your pastor right now!

Pastor, if you’re neck deep in “it” right now - if you’re doing what God has called you to do - what you were born to do… don’t quit! Walk through hell and on the other side you will see the life and ministry you dreamed of. If you need someone to pray with or talk with, contact me! I love pastors who have a passion to make a difference!

Dedicated To…

Tonight Angie and I went on a walk/run.  It’s the end of a long day and we finished it with just over 3 miles.  As we were running at one point I just stopped and watched her.  I didn’t stop because she was kickin’ my tail and I was dead… although that may have been the case - “I do not recall”.   I stopped to watch.  I’ve spent over 21 years watching her.  I never cease to be amazed by this woman.

The last couple of years watching her has brought both great joy and, at times, deep pain.  Transitioning a church that was all about self preservation to birth a church that’s all about loving God and loving others has caused both of us moments of unbelievable pain.  I can handle it when it’s toward me, but watching her hurt was almost unbearable at times.  Yet, in watching her even in those moments I saw a simple, yet profound faith and love for God and others.

Barbaric Grace: The Journey of a Revolution” is scheduled to be released by the publisher this month.  As I was completed the book, the editors needed the “Dedicated to…” page.  This was both the easiest part of the book to write, and the most important.  Without it, the book… the story of C3, and it’s future, would not even exist.  Here’s a glimpse:

To my bride, Angie.
What phrases could be used to thank someone
whose love and influence is beyond words?  You are the
quintessential example of true Barbaric Grace – loving God
and loving others.  For almost twenty years, your
life has taught me this.  Without you, this
journey would have been impossible.
Thank you for showing me daily that
“love wins.”
You’re the love of my life –
and we’ve only just begun.

So… I watch her.  I watch her run, I watch her live and love God, and because of her… I run.

I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. Philippians 3:12-14 (MSG)

“Barbaric Grace” Available

After many months of developing (and years of living) “Barbaric Grace” is about to be released by the publisher. I believe this book will help so many pastors and church leaders - Christ-followers in general. It is the story of a revolution - the story of C3. Of course, all the story couldn’t be contained in one book, but the major principles for transition and the highlights of the process are covered. It’s an insight into not only what God’s done in and through C3, but into our thinking, strategies, obstacles and results as we led through change.

For the next few days, a “pre-release sale” is being offered. If you order your copy during this sale - the shipping and handling is free. Once the book is released (within the next month) this will no longer be offered. Also, there are a limited number of copies for this, so if you want one, order now. To check out what some leaders are saying about “Barbaric Graceclick here.

To C3 - thank you for loving God and loving others! I can’t wait for Sunday. I believe God is going to do huge stuff this weekend at C3. Join me in making it your mission to get people there! Invest and Invite!!!

Ready Or Not…

I can’t believe it’s already mid-December! This year has flown by (every year does). Now it’s really intense as we’re wrapping up the year.

  • We’re moving out of our 60,000+ s/f campus to launch in Regal Cinemas. Our offices are moving to our homes for a while - a virtual office - wow.
  • We’re finalizing plans for the launch, making all the last minute tweaks… it’s unbelievable how much there is to do.
  • We’re hosting/attending Christmas parties, kid’s school programs (they could learn a ton from Verna), Christmas shopping, etc.
  • As if that’s not enough, in the midst of all this, I’m wrapping up the book with the editor and publisher. This has been an incredibly intense process. I’m really excited about how God is going to use this book to help pastors, leaders, and churches evaluate what they do, become more effective, and be aware of the costs up front. It’s full of the lessons we’ve learned from the journey God’s had us on - the victories and mistakes, the highs and lows. Here’s an excerpt from the publisher, as they are in the early stages of advertising (by the way, the book will be available on the C3 site and also through Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, B. Dalton Books, and a few others we’re still working on):

Coming in early 2008… Byron Bledsoe’s groundbreaking “Barbaric Grace: The Journey of a Revolution

What happens when a successful Orlando pastor dares to question everything about the way his church does church, asking: ‘If we were to cease to exist, would the community miss us?’ What follows is a bitter-sweet journey of change, threats of lawsuits, personal threats, betrayal and eventual vindication. It would make an intriguing novel, but it isn’t fiction. This revealing, real-life story of Orlando’s C3 Church and it’s self described ‘North of Normal’ pastor, already being heralded in previews as a ‘powerful page-turner,’ continues to cause a cutting-edge hunger for change among a growing multitude of church leaders who are no longer content to be ‘normal’ in the way they do ministry. Get ready for a revolution!” - Prairie Hill Press

The impact of our story and the principles that guided it will help to mold a ton of churches and set the stage for even greater effectiveness as we learn from each other.
