My Day

Today at C3 Church we wrapped up “Life. Money. Hope.” with Dave Ramsey.  This is a series made possible by Lifechurch.  Dave spoke there and they filmed it for churches to be able to use.  Got to say - best series I’ve seen/heard on money.  (Pastors… use this series - seriously, use it - it will help your people a ton!).

After the C3 gatherings we got to hang with some friends from Texas for lunch - great time catching up.

Tonight I’m just worn out… not sure why - didn’t really sleep well last night.  So, few thoughts bout my day:

  • you-asked-logogreat attendance @ C3 for a holiday weekend… much better than I expected.
  • Can’t wait for “You Asked” beginning next Sunday - kicking off with “Can a Christ-follower drink?” - gonna be a blast (for some :-) ).
  • Excited about C3 hosting the “Xcel Experience” this October - gonna rock! (pastors… check out the site - love to see you there!).
  • Love my bride.  Seriously - greatest woman I’ve ever known.  Her compassion for people and passion for Christ are contagious (and she can stinkin bring it leading worship!).
  • Really looking forward to a family day tomorrow… our kids make each day …interesting - keeps us young and old at the same time.
  • Diesel is growing… fast… really fast.
  • Angie’s purse-dog, Sugar Boy, doesn’t seem to appreciate Diesel…

Finally, I’m grateful.  Tomorrow we celebrate Memorial Day.  We remember those who’ve given their lives for freedom and in protection of this nation.  Right now there are countless thousands of men and women serving our nation… serving us… and I’m grateful.  To those who’ve served in our military, or are serving, thank you.  My prayers and deepest gratitude are with you.

Tomorrow We Let It Fly

Tomorrow I’m not bringing the message @ C3 - we’re going to hear from Dave Ramsey again as we continue “Life. Money. Hope.

I will, however, be sharing in the service one of the most important things I’ve ever talked about.  Several days ago I mentioned that there was something huge in the works for C3 Church - the biggest thing we’ve ever done and it will have major impact, not only in Central Florida but literally across the nation.  Well… tomorrow I will talk about it.  You’re going to find out one of the many things God is doing in and through C3 big time.  So, great message by Dave Ramsey and huge announcement… don’t miss it… and invest and invite!!!

C3 Makes Some Difficult Decisions

Some days are hard.  Today was one of the hardest, and tomorrow will be as well.  As a pastor you rely on the presence and power of God in leading a church.  You also count on those who serve with you, the staff and support staff of the church.  No one will ever see and know the sacrifice that staffs and support staffs make for the vision to become reality.

Over the past 16 months we have seen God do some amazing things in and through C3 Church.  People who would have never considered going to church have walked into C3 and experienced life-change.  We’ve seen 73 adults just this year give their lives to Christ.  Together we’ve helped to feed and provide supplies to about 650 families, and of those many have come to Christ and gotten plugged into C3.  Last summer we were able to provide funds to build a clean-water drinking well in Africa.  The list could go on and on with so many personal stories… God has blessed us in some very unique ways.  We are living the purpose of “Connecting the Community with Christ.”

With all that God’s doing there are still challenges we face.  Our nation is in a desperately fragile condition economically.  Our state has been one of the hardest hit with unemployment rates often higher than the national average.  All of this has impacted churches and non-profit organizations in an unprecedented way.  Until last August, when the economy began to tumble, we were actually ahead of our projections for financial growth.  Then, the financial climate of our nation collapsed.  We all know people who’ve been touched by this - loss of jobs, down-sizing… many are hurting.  We began to hear of major companies laying-off employees, even companies that through past financial struggle have been strong, like Disney, have been forced in this climate to streamline.  Also, many churches both large and small have had to make some very difficult decisions.

At C3, we’ve been able to navigate this challenge without backing off our vision and reason for existing.  We’ve been able to both fulfill our mission and continue to provide for all those who are employed.  Months ago we implemented a phase of restructuring in a number of areas.  Now, having exhausted all possibilities, we’ve come to a time when we too have to further restructure and streamline.  Let me be clear… we are not in financial trouble, but in this fragile financial climate we must make decisions that ensure the health of our resources and the continuing ability to fulfill our very purpose for existing.

So, today and tomorrow we are implementing the elimination of some positions and the restructuring of others for continued efficiency and growth.  These decisions were not easy and only came after months of praying and seeking God’s direction.  Also, none of the decisions were based on personalities - each of these people are extremely precious to me and I love them deeply.  We’ve simply had to make the necessary decisions for the health of the church and the purpose and vision - both of which everyone one on our team has worked so hard to help become a reality.

So, will you join me in the following:

1.  Pray.  Please be praying with me for those who will be seeking employment elsewhere now.  Also, please continue to pray for our team.

2.  Be faithful in attending and serving and inviting.  We have the same mission we had last week and more and more people are responding.  God is growing our church and we get to be a part of changing lives.

3.  Give.  If you’re a Christ-follower - be faithful in bringing your “faith-gift” as you are paid.  Let’s sacrifice in these days together to make sure that Orlando is the hardest place to go to hell from!

Thank you for caring and praying and loving God and loving others.

Today @ C3

Today we wrapped up “So You’re Dead… Now What?”.  After our gatherings, I came home and crashed big time.  It’s been a long time since I rested that much on a Sunday.  Here’s the “down-low” on what’s flying through my head:

  • I’m so grateful for those who serve through C3.  This morning five adults gave their lives to Christ, and without those who serve C3 wouldn’t even be possible.  (I’m really pumped about people giving their lives to Christ each week also!).
  • Communion today was special.
  • Sonny’s for lunch - continuing the crusade against the swine flu :-) .
  • Looking forward to our CG next Sunday night.  I love connecting with people who love God and are loving others and journeying through life together.
  • The next three weeks at C3 are going to be huge.  It will be one of the most beneficial series we’ve ever done.  We’ll be hearing from Dave Ramsey about “Life. Money. Hope.”  I can’t wait.

Guaranteed Failure - Part 4

Today I’ll wrap this up… no more failure stuff :-) .  Here are the last couple things that will guarantee failure in leading, planting or transitioning a church.

7.  Unhealthy Structure

This one is huge.  I talk with pastors all the time that tell me how much potential there is in a certain church/area.  While that may be true, potential will never overcome structure.  A healthy structure is essential for a growing church.  Why?  A number of reasons, but the primary is this - we have an enemy and he hates churches that grow, and he will attack and you better be ready.

I need to stop…  Unfortunately, based on what’s happening in our culture I need to define “growth.”  I’m talking about churches that truly reach people far from God.  I’m not talking about churches who make their habit to go after disgruntled church members of other churches.  I’m not talking about pastors who hire staff guys from other churches in town to hopefully get some of the people to come with them.  I’m not talking about pastors who call key people in other churches to say “I heard you were leaving ___ church and I just want you to know I’m praying for you (which means “please come to my church and bring your checkbook”).  That’s not growth… it’s selling out.  Any manipulator can increase their Sunday numbers that way.  It’s pathetic how many churches get “growth” awards or speak of how “God is blessing” when they’re not really reaching people at all… lot of folks living up in some church houses in delusion. I’m done… for now :-) .

You must have a structure that provides for health.  You must have a structure that allows the leadership to lead.  This convoluted idea of letting everybody vote on stuff is part of what has crippled churches - b/c in many cases loud mouth obnoxious people who have no control in their lives try to seize control of the church.  Seriously, potential will never overcome structure.

8.  If your focus is on building a building instead of building the kingdom.

I constantly hear of pastors saying, “we’ve just got to have a building” or “we’ve got to be able to expand or we can’t really reach more people.“  While I understand what their trying to say, it doesn’t have to be true.  If your passion and drive is to build the kingdom (reach people far from God and grow them in the faith) you won’t have to worry about growth.  There are numerous churches, including C3, that don’t even own buildings and are reaching far more people than the vast majority of churches who do.  Don’t get distracted - don’t flow in side-ways energy.

Please understand I’m not against pursuing buildings as long as it’s not a strain on resources.  There are many churches that have campuses and flow in a way that they have huge impact on their communities… they have the resources to do so.  C3 may one day own a campus, but only when we can do that and pour resources into the community as well.  Think about it, rather than spending millions on a building, if you spent millions on helping hurting people you’d fill the space you have now, several times.  If your financial pie can’t accomplish everything, I guess it just depends on whether your focus is on making those you have happy or going after those who don’t know God.
