That’s What She Said…

It’s been a long day, but a great one.  A few thoughts before crashing tonight:

  • The attendance today at C3 was amazing - much better than I expected for a holiday weekend.
  • My baby nailed “Total Eclipse of the Heart” - wow.
  • Great spirit today - people very receptive.
  • I’m loving “Bodacious 80’s”
  • I’m actually taking the motorcycle safety class this week…
  • I’m ready to kill Axel (not really but maybe)
  • Next week is going to be huge - invest and invite like crazy this week.  Seriously, invite someone everyday!

(That’s what she said has nothing to do with this post, I just think love the phrase and am ready for some Office!).  Peace out!

Bodacious 80’s

Tomorrow we continue “Bodacious ’80’s”.  That’s one day away!  Today, Invest and Invite… and be there five minutes earlier - just five minutes, you don’t want to miss any of the service tomorrow.  Last week we talked about “Something To Believe In” - who do you know that’s looking for that?  Who will you bring with you tomorrow?  At C3 we’re “right where YOU are” so God can change lives.  I can’t wait!

Just My Extremely Acurate Opinion…

I’ve got to say it.  I’m over the whining. I got an email from a pastor today that lit my fire a little.  I’m tired of excuses from guys who are more concerned with job security than reaching people.  Sometimes we spend more time complaining about what we can’t do than actually pursuing what God created us and called us to do.

I continue to be amazed at the number of pastors and leaders who criticize Bill Hybels and Willow Creek for the Reveal Study.  In my opinion (which I am fully persuaded is correct :-) ) many of these don’t have the guts to honestly evaluate how their ministries are doing, but are more than willing to take aim at someone who does it differently, even if that someone is achieving results that many never have.

It seems to me Bill is willing to risk what you and I might think of him because of his apparent desire to truly reach people and help those who desire to do so.  He understands that those who are both critical of his results and impotent in reaching people themselves are simply not his audience.  Also, the very existence of the study “reveals” a desire to grow and change and learn more.

I remember years ago a lunch I had with some of the senior adults in our church.  One lady tossed out (like it was the atomic bomb), “Are we a part of the Willow Creek Association - just tell us the truth”?  There are so many things wrong with that statement and thinking, which came from a biased and ignorant perspective.  At the time we weren’t, today we are.

The following quote is from Bill Hybels… it hopefully it will cause us to think and pursue loving God and loving others rather than to simply figure out how we can position ourselves to look better to other pastors and churches and church people.

Perhaps if more pastors had more courage, more people would know Jesus.

Danger Zone

In our C3 planning meetings Monday one of the things we talked about is something that I’ve continued to process.  It’s a danger zone that any church can find itself in if we’re not both intentional and strategic (many churches are intentional without being also strategic - intentionality will lead to incremental and occasional growth, but when strategy is combined it will lead to crazy growth).

1.  The danger of becoming Institutional.  Any church, regardless of style, will be naturally drawn overtime to turn inward and shift toward an institutional mindset.  We have to fight this tendency by staying barbaric in our pursuit of the vision.  We have to make sure what we’re doing flows from a movement, not toward stagnancy.

2.  The danger of being distracted by the novelty.  While we are intentionally creative and plan engaging services, we must remember that only God can change lives.  Yes we need to be prepared and ready, but the primary focus is not on the novelty of what we’re doing, but on the Spirit of God who can and does change lives.  We’re in Central Florida and can’t outdo Disney, nor do we attempt to.  Our passion is not to have something cool in the service, our passion is to see lives changed, so we communicate as creatively as possible.

3.  The danger of mimicking a model rather than implementing the best ideas and practices for our movement. So many newer churches lack authenticity because of their pursuit to be like someone else.  We need to always be learning from others while yearning for God to show us what our flow and purpose is.

4.  The danger of chasing every opportunity.  This one is difficult for me.  If I’m not careful, my desire to reach as many people as possible can cause me to make decisions that fragment and distract us.  As we grow it becomes easier to think “we can absorb that” and we begin to invest resources and time in things we’re not ready for yet.  We must be true to the C3 Reality and keep a laser focus on our core strategies.

5.  The danger of compromising because of our eagerness to reach people. If we ever have someone say, “I’ll join your church and give major bling as long as you do this ministry“.  The temptation will be to rationalize how those funds could be used, so why not?  No.  There’s too much at stake and we will not prostitute the vision God’s given us for C3.  Don’t misunderstand, we’ll take your bling, but not with strings attached - only God is God and he sets the vision.  We said “Bye-Bye-Bye” to people who thought their money mattered more than reaching people, and I would do it again in a heart beat.

6.  The danger to become entrenched in our way of doing it. We can become just as “traditional” as the traditional church.  We can hold to what has worked to get us here and our practices can become sacred.  We must always be open to and implementing change.  We cannot lose the entrepreneurial spirit that got us here or we won’t get there.  We must always be uncomfortable.

At C3 we’re always mindful of these things.  We moved “right where YOU are” not to become what we were before, but to intentionally and strategically be a part of your life.  It’s our desire to be right where you are in life with engaging and relevant worship experiences that translate to every day of our lives.

I can’t wait for Sunday - get people there!

Right where YOU are!

C3 is launching a new initiative called “Right where YOU are!“  Over the next couple days I’ll talk about what this means.  We’ve added another billboard, and are planning some additional stages of strategy to continue to reach Central Florida.  Check out the new billboard… you’ll see more soon.

Right Where YOU Are

This Sunday we continue “Bodacious ’80’s”.  Invest and Invite - seriously, do whatever you have to do to get people there this week.  I really believe God is going to do something huge in lives.
