A Church Where…

C3 is the church I’ve dreamed of my entire life. Much of the vision God birthed in me for C3 is a direct result of growing up in “church.” I’ve dreamed of a church where all people are really welcome, a church where the Great Commission is more than cheap talk prostituted to the highest religious bidder, a church where love drives decisions, a church where the vision is not for sale, a church where the person coming for the first time, with real needs, is just as valuable as the small business owner - a church that is simply… a church rather than a club.

What God is doing in the life of C3 is a miracle - it’s the story of a movement that couldn’t be stopped. Today, hundreds of C3′ers, and those soon to be, converged upon Moss Park and took it to C3 level! It was an amazing day. And… the story is still young. One family I met today couldn’t believe a church would do something like this for the community - they were blown away, and we’ll see them on a Sunday real soon. The history of this movement will be about so much more than it’s cost. It is a story being written everyday as more and more lives are transformed with the deep, abiding, unconditional love of Christ and a people who are crazy in love with him… so they’re loving others. It’s a story that’s being written not in a brick building on a “plantation”, but in hearts of lives of the community - it’s a story not just for Sundays but for each and every day. It’s the reality of the church - the called out of God impacting the community in huge ways. Jesus said we would do greater things than he did - if the church is not, why not?

Recently I finished the final edits of my first book, “Barbaric Grace” (being released in a few days). The process of writing and editing brought back many memories - many of them of the many battles. I didn’t fully realize early on that it was the battle for the soul of a church. Remembering made me even more grateful for the grace of God and how he has prevailed - and always will. It has made me more humbled and grateful for the opportunity to pastor the greatest church in the world.

The baptism in the lake was awesome also! The last guy I baptized today flew in from NC from a business trip and was flying back out this afternoon to Dallas on another business trip. He flew back home to Orlando to come to C3 just to be baptized - God’s done an amazing work in his life and his future is full. Tomorrow I’ll throw up some pics of C3 Day at Moss Park - until then, thank you C3 for being the church I’ve always dreamed of - the church God had in mind. It’s the C3 Reality!

C3 Day @ Moss Park

Strategic Steps

I’m pumped about the future of C3. When we began this journey we intentionally selected the name, C3. This community of faith is all about “Connecting the Community with Christ.” That means so much. Not only are we about bringing people to faith in Christ, but also bringing the love of Christ into our community in greater ways.

We dared to ask the question, “If our church were to cease to exist would the community miss us?” The church I used to pastor - not even a little bit! But C3, oh yeah! C3 has made a huge difference in so many lives and we’re continuing to take it to the next level.

As we launched “BIG and RICH” we determined to step it up. So, we’ve partnered with Feed The Children (an international organization doing an amazing job making a difference) to host a food drop for May 10 - the day before Mother’s Day. We will be providing food and other necessities for 400 needy families of 4, for a week! That’s right… 400 families!  This is a huge opportunity to show the love of Christ. More details will be coming soon - this is only the beginning! If you want to be part of a church that’s not just talkin’ smack, but is givin’ back in the community - C3 is for you!

C3 - don’t miss Moss Park this Sunday - check it out, invite friends like crazy, and come have a blast!

To Elevate You Must Evaluate

On Mondays I always watch the game footage from Sunday (in my mind, of course). I look at what we did well, and what we can improve. Even on the best days it is essential that we never become complacent or “satisfied.” There is a huge difference in being content and being satisfied (another post for another time). I really believe to elevate you must evaluate.

So, here’s my behind-the-scenes assessment of C3 yesterday.

Let’s start with the key plays - what we did well:

  1. Planning. Our Team is relentless in our planning. We spend significant time talking through the elements of the service and message. I use a team to help with message development which has greatly improved our connection in communication.
  2. Volunteers. C3 has the greatest group of volunteers of any church I know. These people understand Barbaric Grace and they step up big time each week. It’s simply hard to believe we’re a portable church when you come through the doors. The atmosphere is electric and the people of C3 are so warm and welcoming.
  3. Attendance. Yesterday we had the largest attendance we’ve ever had in the theaters - 718! We can use all the creative elements to “advertise” and “market” C3, but the most effective way to get people to C3 is for you to invest in a relationship with them and personally invite them! We’ve tracked it - by far it’s the most effective method of growth. So, keep it up!!!
  4. Execution. Each week, prior to the 1st service I meet with some of our team in a private room and we go through the flow and message elements. Final tweaks are made. Then, immediately after the 1st service we meet again and make changes - we talk through what didn’t flow or what didn’t come across well - we make the necessary changes and do it again. Yesterday, the execution awesome. It’s the first time I can remember that we really didn’t make any changes for the second service.

What didn’t go well:

You would never know this if I didn’t tell you. That’s because the Team God has placed around me is phenomenal! There were 2 primary elements of this weeks game plan that totally fell apart late in the week. As a pastor, Easter is huge. The pressure is massive. It’s one of the biggest gifts you can get in church life - the momentum of Easter, so to capitalize on it and maximize it is always part of our strategy. We’re not satisfied with “many people will come just because it’s Easter.” Our thinking is, “yes many will come, how can we get even more?

So, we invested in a unique video designed just for C3 involving U2 and… well I’m not going to tell you yet. We got the final version on Friday (past the deadline) and we couldn’t use it. It just wasn’t good enough. That’s right, we killed a major element of the service on Friday afternoon!

Also, we invested heavily in a major mailing to tens of thousands of homes in East Orlando which was messed up by the printer and didn’t arrive on time (many people in the area still haven’t gotten it)! This wasn’t just your typical church mailing - it is a full brochure about our church. If it had arrived on time it would have been significant for Easter.

Here’s the deal - in-spite of the issues, God moved. Our team busted it and everyone pitched in and we rebuilt pieces of the service on Saturday. If you were there Sunday morning - it was incredible, powerful, and very moving. Sometimes things happen beyond our control - and that kills me because I’m a control freak when it comes to Sundays. Yet, God moved. He blessed the efforts of busting it and not settling. Again, our largest attendance yet, 718! So, now you know. Oh… and the U2 video - well you’ll have to find out later, we’re having it re-done and you’ll see it in the future.

Bottom line - if you get people to C3, we will deliver… God will deliver every single time because it’s just that important. Lives are at stake - whose will you touch this week and get to Moss Park this Sunday?!

It was Friday, Now It’s Sunday

Today, as usual at C3, was awesome. For me, the service was very moving. Here are a few thoughts:

  • Great crowds today. It’s just in the DNA of C3 to invest and invite.
  • I continue to be forever grateful to the volunteers that make everything happen - so many people that give of themselves to make a difference.
  • God changed many lives - only he can do that.
  • I am so blessed. When I look at my life, my family, the church God allows me to pastor, the future that is in store… I am so blessed.
  • Today also held special significance for me and Angie. It was today, March 23, 5 years ago that I became the Senior Pastor of what would become C3 Church. Honestly, so much has happened, so many “moments.” I stood in the room today looking in the faces of a different church - a church that didn’t exist 5 years ago - many people who were far from God and didn’t even know him 5 years ago - but today, because of the movement that is C3, they not only know him, they’re now inviting others to know him. One of the things I’m most grateful for in life is that the church I pastor today is not the church I became pastor of 5 years ago. I wouldn’t go back for anything! We lived through many “Fridays” but “Sunday” finally came.

C3 - invite like crazy this week -next Sunday we’re not at Regal, we’re having C3 Day at Moss Park! Check out more info here - don’t miss it!
