A Reminder

Lifeway’s Research department released the following information:

Tripping over the church

The negative perception for many people, however, seems to be the church, not Jesus himself, according to the study.

While 64 percent of the respondents think “the Christian religion is a relevant and viable religion for today,” 79 percent think Christianity “is more about organized religion than about loving God and loving people.” Seventy-two percent said they think the church ‘is full of hypocrites, people who criticize others for doing the same things they do themselves,” and 86 percent believe they “can have a good relationship with God without being involved in church.”

The belief that church attendance isn’t necessary for spiritual well-being is just as common among adults who grew up in church as it is among those who attended church less often as children, McConnell said.

“Unchurched people do not understand the connection between having a relationship with God and being with other believers in church,” he said. “In the Christian faith, these are inseparable. Jesus’ last prayer before being arrested, as recorded in John 17, was that everyone who believes in Him would be unified and work together to let the world know that God loves them and sent Jesus.

“People on the outside see the church as candles, pews and flowers, rather than people living out their love for God by loving others,” he added. “Such skepticism can only be overcome by churches and believers who demonstrate the unity and love for which Jesus prayed.”

Stetzer explained, “There will always be the stumbling block of the cross. Yet our study shows that many are tripping over the church before they hear the message of the cross.”

The research from USA Today and Lifeway is a staggering reminder that while the message of hope in Christ never changes, our methods must be continually evaluated. Our goal is not to embrace a religious club where we all look alike, rather it is to embrace loving God and loving others.

C3, there’s never been a greater time to be alive! People are starving and searching for what we offer. Invest and Invite (C3N30)- Sunday’s going to rock!

Things That Help

I’ve had a number of pastors and church leaders ask me recently how C3 was able to experience such a successful launch at Regal Cinemas. Obviously God’s favor was the overriding factor. I do believe there are some things he used that got huge results.

  1. Buy in from our people. I’ve never seen a group of people so excited about ministry and reaching others. From the hundreds who’ve stepped up volunteering, to C3er’s investing and inviting - just getting people there - it has all exceeded our expectations.
  2. Being prepared and planning for growth is huge. Sometimes I think we really limit what God longs to do because we don’t think big. The Management Team and Directors did an amazing job and we were ready.
  3. PCI - Portable Church Industries. If you lead a portable church - these guys are awesome. There are some areas you can save money, but the way they package stuff for ease of use and saving time in transit is worth the cost. Sound, lights, kids stuff - all of it is excellent - in fact, it’s far better that what we had at our previous campus.
  4. Publicity. You really have to study what works for your location. In some areas of the country there are things that work that don’t work in others. For us, the two avenues of publicity we’ve seen the greatest results, so far, are our billboards and mass mailings. For us, every time we do them we get huge results. Now we have the resources to do them more often. When doing mass mailings it’s important to remember a few things:
  • Make sure you’re delivering what you’re advertising. For example, we will advertise hard about our Children’s Ministry because the quality is second to none.
  • Realize there are church idiots who spend a ton of time thinking of themselves, even when you’re not. We got a few calls from people who wanted to make sure we knew they were not interested in coming to C3, and to proudly tell us what church they are attending (and they did it in a rude and ugly way). To them - don’t worry, we’re not interested in you coming to C3 either - it just wouldn’t work, we’re not building a culture of people that think only of themselves. Why is it these people don’t think, “Wow, that’s cool - a church reaching out. I wonder what my church could do?” Go ahead and call us to complain - we’ll ignore it because we can’t do a thing about it, it’s a list we buy, AND we’re busy reaching your neighbors instead of waisting time on the phone. (I wonder how many times these people call Walgreen’s when they get their flyer to tell them they use CVS… I really don’t need to say anything else about it other than -these people really crack me up. Hey, we’ve moved on, literally and figuratively - you might want to try it - cuz you’re about to get another one!!!
  • If you do mailings, use a company that provides a zip code list. Our mailings include people’s names on them. It’s more personal.
  • Also, most of the publicity will lead people to your website - make sure it’s crackin.

These are just a few things that have helped us jump huge. The bottom line is - go after people who are far from God. The biggest results come from personal invitations - so our advertising and marketing is simply to assist with that.

Invest and Invite - Sunday’s coming and so are your friends, right?

Trying To Love Monday

Mondays are… Mondays.

  • I believe God’s going to continue to teach us major stuff next Sunday as we continue, “Losing My Religion.”
  • We had a Church Planter in our service who’s taking some stuff to implement in their new church. God continues to give us greater and greater opportunities to invest in other Pastors and Churches, and even denominations.
  • We also had a minister from a church in another state visiting yesterday - from what I understand they loved what we are doing and went home with some ideas.
  • I love our Children’s Ministry. Last night I talked with both of my sons about Powerhouse (our Sunday morning children’s experience). Both of them told me what God was teaching them, and how they could apply it to their lives. They continue to be captivated by the quality and energy that Powerhouse has. They said it’s really important to make sure that in life we never get so busy that we don’t notice or help friends who need it. That’s what God wants us to do because He loves us, and He loves them, and He wants to love them through us. Dad-gum-it!!! Where was this kind of church when I was a kid?! To those of you investing in children - you’re making a huge difference. Thank you!
  • I hate it when Angie’s sick. She does such a great job taking care of me or the kids when we’re sick. I pretty much stink at it, but I’m trying real hard - just got back from Starbucks.
  • Since Angie’s not feeling well, I’m getting to also take care of “Sugar Boy” (her tiny little purse rat dog). I will say he’s learning some NEW things. He’s either going to morph into an incredible watch dog, or he’s going to need some serious therapy.
  • I don’t know who invented Star Wars Lego - but I think I hate them!
  • I’m ready for the book to be done - I’m in a major crunch to meet deadlines now!
  • Can you put your kids to be at 6 pm?
  • Do they have to eat first?
  • How often do you change the sheets?
  • They don’t all need pillows, do they?
  • I think we need a new washing machine now -I just took everything we had, plus some sheets and turned that baby on. The lid wouldn’t close, so I sat a couple clothes baskets and box of detergent that weighs at least 100 lbs on it - it’s making noises I’ve never heard, but I’m too scared to go back in there.
  • I’ve helped with three different grades of homework now…
  • I dropped the iron today, so tomorrow we’re going to see if a hair straightener will work - it’s great to have teenage daughters that share.
  • I helped Ethan with a major life issue. He’ll be 7 this Saturday. He’s decided he needs a girlfriend. So, he asked me how to ask a girl to be his girlfriend. I told him he really needs to get to know her first (Yes, he already has someone in mind). So, he’s decided he can get to know her by lunch time tomorrow and then ask her. He says there’s no way she’ll say “no.” Wow.
  • Please pray real hard for Angie’s recovery - it really is best for our kids!!!
  • What does it mean if there’s sudsy water coming from under the utility room door?

Big Theater

Today was a blast. To watch “the crew” roll with the changes and fulfill their responsibility is incredible. They barely got the routine down in the other theater, and then in only 3 weeks, we move theaters. I’m so grateful for the people that just make it happen on Sundays.
Then, we still had huge numbers! Also, 7 more people became Christ-followers today. There’s just something beyond explanation about what’s happening at C3. Invest and Invite - don’t miss what God’s doing! Have a great week - live it intentionally.

LMR and MP

This Sunday, at C3, we continue the groundbreaking series, “Losing My Religion.” I believe this series has huge potential to impact many lives. There are people you and I know who live with the hurts that religion has caused. There are people we know who need to experience the unconditional, deep, abiding love of God. C3N30 is about each of us purposing to invest and invite at least three people to worship during the first 30 days of C3. Last Sunday was a huge success! This Sunday, we will have more room - we’ve already outgrown the theater in just 3 weeks, so we’re moving to the largest theater Regal has. We’ve got a day before Sunday - INVEST and INVITE! (You can even send e-vites here). Is there anyone you know that could use a phone call inviting them to C3 Sunday for this series? As we continue this series we’ll be talking about:

  • Stop Pointing At Me (Jan. 27)
  • I Can’t Keep All The Rules (Feb. 3)
  • Pretending To Be Perfect (Feb. 10)

Also, be sure and put C3 Day at Moss Park on your schedule. We’ve got the all the pavilions and the park area, and we’ll be baptizing in the lake that day. More details will be coming.

Sunday’s going to be not only inspirational and helpful, but life-changing! I can’t wait.
